In heraldry, a lantern or beacon is symbolic of one who is watchful, who gave the signal in time of danger. A candle represents light, life and spirituality.
It is said that nurse Florence Nightingale wore a signet ring with a lantern surrounded by the sentiment BRIGHTER HOURS WILL COME as she tended wounded soldiers during the Crimean War (1853 - 1856) … the lady with the lamp.

Impressed from a lovely early Victorian era wax seal fob (1837 - 1901), the fob with a carnelian hard stone intaglio, its sentiment carved in reverse, and set into a gold fob casing meant for suspension from a watch chain or similar.
Its original purpose was functional, when letters had to be sealed closed with melted wax (thus the reverse engraved lettering) and was also decorative and fashionable for both men and women to wear.
