- symbolism -
A horse drawn carriage carried the mail, or post, in Great Britain from 1784 until the 1850's when they were replaced by trains as the railway network expanded.  They were called mail coaches, or post coaches.
Nostalgia for these mail coaches brought the tradition of coaching to the US. Considered a sport for the wealthy, a Coaching Club was formed by names such as the Vanderbilts, the Belmonts, and the Wetmores, who brought together their authentic 19th century coaches - horse drawn open air carriages - to go to the races, polo games and to the casino.
This tradition inspired coaching weekends in Newport.  Every three years the Preservation Society of Newport County hosts a Weekend of Coaching - the next to be held in August 2018.
