The cool little quahog shell, Quint donning sunglasses, was inspired by a linoleum block print carved by Jeff of Taft Street Studios … we met at a RI show and thought it would be fun to collaborate so I took his 2D image, carved it in wax and had it lost wax cast in sterling silver.

About the quahog: Rhode Island, known as the Ocean State and the smallest state in the US, is known for its vast coastline and sandy shores so naturally, shellfish dominated RI cuisine for centuries … especially oysters and lobsters but when industrial pollution and the great hurricane of 1938 wiped out the Narragansett Bay oyster industry (shucking houses, wharves and oyster boats) the quahog took center stage … a large hardshell clam that burrows in the muddy sands of the intertidal zone … we dig these quahogs year-round from the shore between the tides and make delicious RI dishes like stuffies (which are stuffed clams), clams casino and clam chowder and these foods continue to dominate RI restaurant cuisine.
In 1987 the quahog was declared the Rhode Island State Shell.
And by the way you Family Guy fans, there is no Quahog, RI … it’s a fictional city in RI.
