spiral shell necklace pendant in sterling silver - organic puka spiral
Inspired by the natural beauty of spirals within shells found scattered along the shoreline, I have taken their beauty a step further to create this wonderfully simple spiral shell necklace pendant in sterling silver, an elevated puka shell pendant ... organic jewelry found between the tides.
- description -
The puka shell is a beach worn piece of a cone shell, naturally occurring with a beautiful spiral leading to a hole in the center of the shell fragment ... the smoothing of the broken shell fragment is the result of being tossed and tumbled by the tides and waves.
- symbolism -
Legend has it that wearing a puka shell ensures a peaceful and safe voyage.
The beautiful spiral … one of the most ancient geometric shapes in history, we find them in art, artifacts and architecture both ancient and current and everything in between and we find them naturally occurring in shells, fossils and plants (think fiddlehead). Early on it was described as the eternal line and to many it is symbolic of transformation, self discovery, change and the interconnectedness of all life.
- approximate measurement - 1/2" (11mm)
- spiral puka shell metal - sterling silver (.925 silver)
- photographed with a US dime and a one inch ruler for scale
- spiral puka shell charm only
- shown suspended on an oxidized sterling silver cable chain sold separately here
I have sand cast the spiral puka shell, as I found it in nature between the tides, in sterling silver. Then after cleaning up the casting I added the suspension loops and oxidized it to reveal its beautiful spiral within.
The sand casting process - I create a mold in packed sand, torch melt the metal and pour it into the cavity of the sand mold. The cooled metal is then removed and the castings require quite a lot of clean up before being finished and fashioned into jewelry. It’s a process done one at a time, a new sand mold is made for each and every casting and therefore every item will vary uniquely with natural imperfections due to the sand casting process.
Hand crafted jewelry because I believe how it's made matters.
