tiny star fossil ring - crinoid star - fossil hunter jewelry
A very cool rustic signet style ring with an embedded tiny star fossil … a crinoid star fossil ... endlessly interesting historic fossil jewelry for the fossil hunter or fossil collector in all of us.
I've carved the asymmetrical signet ring in wax and then sand cast it in sterling silver with an embedded bronze star fossil which I had previously sand cast from an actual fossil.
The star fossils are also called sea lily fossils and date back up to 201 million years ago, perhaps even earlier and believe it or not they are very common fossils if you look in the right places. They were sea animals, like sea stars and sea urchins.
- approximate signet face measurement - 3/4“ (16mm) x 1/4” (6mm) at wider end
- signet metal - recycled sterling silver (.925 silver)
- star fossil metal - bronze
- star fossil measurement - 1/4" (7mm)
- ring size 9 but do contact me if you're interested in another size and I can carve a wax ring and repeat the process ... this will take a few weeks before shipping
- photographed with a US dime and inch ruler for scale
The sand casting process - I create a mold in packed sand, torch melt the metal and pour it into the cavity of the sand mold. The cooled metal is then removed and the castings require quite a lot of clean up before being finished and fashioned into jewelry. It’s a process done one at a time, a new sand mold is made for each and every casting and therefore every item will vary uniquely with natural imperfections due to the sand casting process.
Hand crafted jewelry because I believe how it's made matters.
