poppet doll necklace pendant ... doll jewelry talisman
With a nod to days gone by, a darling little sterling silver poppet doll necklace pendant, with 14k gold wire accents … some may describe her as cute and others creepy. Historic one of a kind whimsical doll jewelry.
A poppet is a little hand made stuffed doll, often filled with herbs and crystals, crude and rustic, dating back to at least Puritan New England times and many believed them to have magical powers. The poppet is thought to be used in witchcraft and folk traditions, representing a person or to be used in other workings, often thought of as a talisman. Some poppets were made for love, prosperity, hexing, protection and healing.
During the Salem Witch Trials (February 1692 – May 1693) poppets were considered evidence so anyone found with one would be suspected of witchcraft and that’s exactly what happened to Bridget Bishop, the first person to be executed in the Witch Trials, partially because poppets were allegedly found inside the walls of her home.

After a recent visit to Salem, MA I returned to the studio to sculpt a little poppet doll in wax, inspired by an original 17th century poppet on display at the Witch House, with her head slightly cocked to the side just as the actual display poppet looked. I tried to keep her proportions accurate, just smaller scale, connecting it to real history.
Then I sand cast the little wax poppet doll in reclaimed sterling silver and finished her up with a little bit of sweet creepy in mind, elevated with a thin 14k gold wire where the original doll maker had tied fabric to separate her head from her body. Because each poppet is individually sand cast in my little studio the organic, rustic, irregular sand texture will vary from poppet to poppet.
Endlessly interesting jewelry inspired by history!
