The post-Medieval silver seal matrix was manufactured by Thomas Willmore at Birmingham in 1799.
This matrix has an oval die and an elaborate handle. The openwork handle consists of two back-to- back scrolls surmounted by an ovolo terminal. Between the handle and die there is a short stem, circular in cross-section. The oval die has a cast fouled anchor. It has a plain stock, large flukes and a rope ring. An oblique scroll across the shank has the word: 'HOPE'.
The stamped hallmark situated on the upper face of the die: a lion passant, anchor, sovereign's head, lower case 'b' and maker's mark: T W indicates that it was manufactured in Birmingham by Thomas Willmore in 1799 (Bly 1988: 61).
