*St. Francis of Assisi, born in 1181 in Italy, abandoned a life of wealth and luxury ... well dressed, fine food, fine drink and women for a life devoted to Christianity after coming under heavy attack on the battlefield while fighting the war between Assisi and Perugia in 1202. He was captured, wearing his fine new armor, and taken prisoner for nearly a year. It was there that he reportedly heard the voice of God, who commanded him to rebuild the Christian church and live in poverty. His followers became known as the Franciscan friars.
At the age of 44, Francis of Assisi died (October 3rd 1226) and two years later was canonized as a saint.
He is the patron saint for ecologists, a title that honored his boundless love for animals and nature.

He who works with his hands is a laborer.
He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman.
He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.
~ Saint Francis of Assisi
