United, the thistle and the rose wax seal necklace pendant - both sides of the tweed, the Scottish thistle and the English rose. The Scottish thistle and the English rose are united by a riband, or ribbon, below a banner with the sentiment WHA DAUR MEDDLE WI US, a Scottish - Gaelic motto meaning WHO DARE MEDDLE WITH US or NO ONE CAN HARM ME WITHOUT PUNISHMENT ... historic Scottish wax seal jewelry.

- symbolism -
In heraldry, the thistle is symbolic of defiance and surliness and is the royal badge of Scotland and the rose is the badge of England.
Inspired by the 1503 marriage of James IV of Scotland to Princess Margaret (Henry VII’s daughter, Henry VIII's sister) and the poem by Scottish poet William Dunbar entitled THE THRISSIL AND THE ROIS (which translates THE THISTLE AND THE ROSE) the thistle represented King James and the rose represented Princess Margaret.

Impressed from a Victorian (1840) wax seal that's part of a romantic handcrafted turned ivory stacking tower of glass intaglio seals.  The last photos depict the wax seal set and wax seal necklace charms made from the wax seals in the set.

NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT was the Latin motto of the Royal Stuart dynasty of Scotland but it has been loosely rendered in Scots as WHA DAUR MEDDLE WI US - both meaning no one provokes me with impunity or no one can harm me unpunished.
