jewelry hook - hand holding serpent hook - snake hook - charm holder
Borrowing from history, a hand grasping a serpent hook or watch chain hook, to suspend from a chain and gather your favorite charms, to hold onto your rings when you need to take them off (so you won't leave them behind somewhere) or to wear as is.
The beautifully detailed Victorian gloved hand is holding a serpent with its head curved to create a hook.
Important note - the serpent head is a bit large so charm bails with an inside diameter of 4mm - 5mm or larger will easily slip over the serpent head.
- hand holding serpent length - 1 3/4" (45mm)
- hand holding serpent width - 5/8" (15mm)
- serpent hook is solid, not hollow, detailed on all sides
- sterling silver bail loop - 5mm (6/32") inside diameter - it will accommodate a rather thick chain
- photographed with an old US dime for scale
- metal - sterling silver (.925 silver)
- listing is for one hand holding serpent hook
- symbolism -
Snake, or serpent, jewelry was very popular in the 19th century and was symbolic of eternity.
The hook would have hooked over a button, through a buttonhole, or over a belt.
The original 19th century gilt hand holding serpent hook was part of an old watch chain and had a few rough spots but was transformed with a little bit of love before being reproduced.
The last photo shows the plain serpent hook next to the hand holding a serpent hook.
