Aquidneck Island is the local name for an island whose official name was Rhode Island. It is the largest island in Narragansett Bay and is shared by the city of Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth. "Aquidneck" is derived from the Narragansett name for the island, aquidnet and literally means “floating-mass-at.” I have also read that Aquidneck is a native name for “Isle of Peace".
Jamestown, also known as Conanicut Island, is the second largest island in Narragansett Bay. In 1678, the island was incorporated as the town of Jamestown in Rhode Island.
It was named for James, Duke of York, who became King James II in 1685.
Block Island sits in the Atlantic Ocean about 13 miles off the coast of RI and is also known as New Shoreham, RI. The island of rolling hills and ponds was formed as the glaciers melted. The island is just 9.734 square miles. The original inhabitants, the Narragansett Indians, named the island “Manisses” which means “Island of the Little God.”
Cape Cod was named in 1602 by Englishman Bartholomew Gosnold for the plentiful cod found in its waters, the pilgrims were here in 1620 before moving onto Plymouth. With its distinct hook stretching into the Atlantic Ocean, it is 64 miles long and became an island in 1914 after the completion of the Cape Cod Canal.
Martha’s Vineyard is an island with an area of 87.48 square miles. Known as an affluent summer colony, the Vineyard is part of the Elizabeth Islands, located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. The original inhabitants were the Wampanoag Indians who named the island
“Noepe” meaning “land amid the streams”
Nantucket is a town, a county and an island, just 47.8 square miles, located 30 miles south of Cape Cod, MA. Its name is derived from “natocke, nantaticut or nautican” which likely meant “far away island.” The original inhabitants were the Wampanoag Indians who named the island “Canopache” meaning “place of peace.”
