A cute little otter wax seal necklace pendant, above the Latin motto SPERO MELIORA, reminding you to aspire to better things.
- description -
The little otter, looking to the left, sits within a shield with its original owners initials JS and a banner, within which is the Latin motto SPERO MELIORA which translates I ASPIRE TO BETTER THINGS or I HOPE FOR BETTER THINGS. We can, and we will, do better.
Note: the words are small and faint so challenging to read because the lovely wax seal from which it was stamped was well loved and worn rather smooth in areas.
- symbolism -
In heraldry, the otter symbolizes industry and perseverance, as well as the special ability to quickly become playful. It is a symbol of grace and empathy and may also represent one who lives life fully.
It is very often found in Scottish and Irish coats of arms.
Hand cast from a Georgian era (1714–1830) small desk wax seal with a lovely turned ivory handle with a carved fist at the top. See the photo because the detail is gorgeous! Ivory is the hard white material from teeth and tusks of whales and other animals and was rather commonly used for many ornamental and practical items before the introduction to plastics.
