- symbolism -

In heraldry, the weeping willow tree is symbolic of pliancy; serenity and friendship; patience and perseverance because even in the strongest winds its flexible branches bend but don’t easily break.
The weeping willow often represents weeping, grief, sorrow and mourning. Its drooping branches convey a picture of the grief felt for the loss of one departed and is often represented on mourning jewelry and carved on cemetery headstones but as a headstone symbol, the weeping willow can also mean happiness and immortality and eternity.
It is also said that the weeping willow represents balance, learning, growth, harmony, and also strength, stability, with the structure of the trunk standing firm, withstanding the greatest of challenges.

William Shakespeare makes reference to the weeping willow in:
- Othello when Desdemona, the heroine of the play, sings the Willow Song in her despair.
 - Hamlet when Ophelia falls into the river when the willow branch on which she is sitting breaks.  She floats for a while, buoyed by her clothing, but she eventually sinks and drowns.  The weeping willow tree leaning over Ophelia is symbolic of forsaken love.
- Twelfth Night where the willow is symbolic unrequited love. Viola is dwelling on her love for Orsino when she, dressed as Caesario, replies to Countess Olivia's question about falling in love by saying "make me a willow cabin at your gate, and call upon my soul within the house."
